The effects of basic psychological needs satisfaction and mindfulness on solicitors’ well-being

Rising reports of poor mental health and well-being in lawyers across multiple jurisdictions, notably the United States America, Australia, Kingdom (UK), have led to a growing international focus on this topic. Yet there remains paucity empirical data solicitors practising England Wales. Framed by self-determination theory (SDT), we undertook cross-sectional survey 340 trainee qualified Wales (1) benchmark psychological against other UK occupational groups adult population norms; (2) test relationships between mindfulness, satisfaction basic needs (perceived autonomy, relatedness, competence at work) well-being. The SDT components positively significantly related Mindfulness partially mediated pathway well-being, suggesting that these may themselves facilitate higher thereby contributing greater levels We conceive work provide space necessary for mindfulness be cultivated, within which can thrive. These findings support importance systemic approach solicitors’ safeguard workplace.
